Tooth fairy payments up

The tooth fairy has made a rebound after rewards for lost teeth fell ten percent last year amid the credit crunch. The average payout per tooth increased to $2.13 this year from $1.88, up thirteen percent. Despite this average, tooth fairy payments varied greatly between individual households, ranging from five cents to fifty dollars.

The 2010 Tooth Fairy Poll, conducted by Delta Dental of Minnesota, surveyed more than 1500 families across the country about their dental habits. "This year's Tooth Fairy Poll average reflects improvements we're seeing in other areas of the economy," says Ann Johnson, director of community affairs. "For example, the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 23 percent during the same time period. The Tooth Fairy may be another indicator that the economy is starting to recover."

According to the survey, the tooth fairy visits roughly 84% of households. Via WebMD.

Runway Fairies? Victoria's Secret Fashion Show features lovely fairy wings

Although I don't typically keep up with "high" fashion, pictures of Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which aired yesterday, keep popping up all over the internet. I must admit, the models displayed some gorgeous wings. Although Victoria's Secret wings usually follow more of an angel theme, the fae almost certainly inspired some of their creations, like the epic butterfly wings above. FairyGuide.com already reported that amid economic uncertainty, many fairy retailers have enjoyed strong sales. The folks at eFairies put forth an interesting explanation in their latest press release: "The fairy industry does not seem to be affected by the economy as fairy retailers such as eFairies.com have only experienced growth in sales this year. The economic downturn has consumers looking for ways to find magic and happiness.

Will Twilight usher in a fairy era?

The long awaited new Twilight movie came out today! Although I never really got into the series myself, some critics keep citing its rise as evidence of the growing popularity of the fantasy genre. When the vampire craze dies down, they predict, fairies will sweep Hollywood to become the next big thing (think of how the Pirates of the Caribbean pirate fan scene opened the way for Twilight's vampire). They point to an increasing number of popular fairy books as evidence, including Wings, fittingly a kind of fairy version of Twilight, which will soon become a major Hollywood vehicle starring Miley Cyrus. Are you going to see Twilight, and do you agree with predictions of fairy fame? In addition, how do you feel about the increasing commercialization of fairies?

Quick hit: fairy books on the rise

Dawn is breaking on the Y.A. aisle of the bookstore, and the dew is suspiciously glittery. Look quickly and you may catch the hoofprint of a magical steed and the flutter of a wing. A recent crop of fairy-themed novels and reworked fairy tales is proving the surprising resilience of an age-old genre.

These aren’t gift-shop fairies. They’re capricious, twilight creatures that travel between the fairy realm and our own, meddling in human lives. In Cyn Balog’s “Fairy Tale,”a clairvoyant high school girl discovers that her perfect boyfriend is actually a changeling — a fairy child raised by unsuspecting humans. Malinda Lo’s somber and lovely “Ash” is a lesbian retelling of “Cinderella.” Lisa Mantchev’s theatrical fantasy “Eyes Like Stars” pits a plucky orphan, Beatrice Shakespeare Smith, and her fairy attendants against the wiles of Ariel and a stuffy stage manager. In Aprilynne Pike’s “Wings,” the new girl at school is mortified to realize she’s sprouting a set of perfumed flower-wings.
